Cornelia Ilie is Professor of Linguistics and Rhetoric at Strömstad Akademi, Sweden and Visiting Professor at Hellenic American University, Athens, Greece. She has held professorships at Örebro University and Malmö University, Sweden. Earlier she was research fellow at Lancaster University, UK and research scholar at U.C. Berkeley. She also held visiting professorships at universities in Austria (University of Vienna), Finland (University of Jyväskylä), Greece (University of Thessaloniki), Italy (Luiss University, Rome; IMT, Lucca; Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa), Japan (Waseda University and Meisei |University), Romania (University of Bucharest), Spain (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona), and the UK (University of London).

She is the founder and president of ESTIDIA (European Society for Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Dialogue), Board member of IPrA (International Pragmatics Association), and Member of the Reference Group of Experts (Higher Education and Education for All) of the IAU (International Association of Universities).

Her research interests are interdisciplinary and internationally anchored. She has coordinated and/or participated in several research projects, e.g., Rhetoric and Argumentation in Media Discourse (1996-1997), funded by HSFR (Swedish Council for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences); The Rhetoric of British, Polish and Swedish Political Debates, funded by Östersjöstiftelsen (The Baltic Sea Foundation) (1998-2001); Assuming Citizenship Roles: Deliberative Dialogues in Schools (2004-2006); ECIPARDIS (Europe and Citizenship in Parliamentary Discourses), funded by FAS (Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research) – (2006-2008); ERN-LWE (The European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively), funded by COST Action IS0703 (2009-2012); GENPARDIS (Gender and Parliamentary Discourse Practices), funded by the Swedish Research Council (2010-2013); Multichannel Banking Communication: An Investigation of the Challenges of Customer-centric Multichannel Banking in the UAE and Italy, funded by Zayed University RIF grant R14117 (2014-2016); The Ukraine Conflict as a Battlefield of Competing Legitimisation Discourses, funded by the University of Zürich, Switzerland (2015-2017).

She is Associate Editor of the international refereed journal Palgrave Communications, and member of the editorial board of several refereed journals: Argumentation: An International Journal on Reasoning; Journal of Argumentation in Context (JAIC); Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict (JLAC); International Journal of Cross-Cultural Studies and Environmental Communication; Mots: Les langages du politique; Eris-Rivista internazionale di argomentazione e dibattito; Studii de Lingvistică.

Professor Ilie has organised and co-organised several international conferences and workshops/panels at universities in Europe and the USA. She is regularly invited to act as external examiner of research proposals and postgraduate courses, e.g., for the Research Council for Culture and Society of the Academy of Finland, the University of Warwick, the University of Milan, and the University of Vienna. She has acted as external examiner for several PhD theses defended at universities in Sweden, Australia, Spain, New Zealand and Romania.

She has published extensively on institutional pragmatics and discourse practices (particularly political, media and academic discourses), intercultural rhetoric and argumentation. In addition to numerous book chapters, refereed journal and encyclopedia articles, her recent publications include the following books: The Use of English in Institutional and Business Settings: An Intercultural Perspective (Peter Lang, 2007); European Parliaments under Scrutiny: Discourse Strategies and Interaction Practices (John Benjamins, 2010); Evolving Genres in Web-mediated Communication (Peter Lang, 2012); International Encyclopedia of Language and Social Interaction (Wiley-Blackwell, 2015); Parliaments and Parliamentarism: A Comparative History of Disputes about a European Concept (Berghahn Books, 2016-paperback and 2017-hardback); Argumentation across Communities of Practice: Multi-disciplinary Perspectives (John Benjamins 2017); Challenging Leadership Stereotypes through Discourse: Power, Management and Gender (Springer 2017); Pragmatics and Its Interfaces (John Benjamins 2018).
