Fotini Egglezou

Foteini Egglezou is born in Athens. She studied Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (School of Philosophy). She has been awarded by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation for her Master’s Degree in Language Arts at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Pedagogical Department). She is Doctor of Philosophy in Language Arts Education and Rhetoric at the University of Ioannina. The topic of her PhD dissertation touches upon the topic: Teaching the argumentative writing in primary school. She speaks Greek, French, English, Italian.

Since 2017 she teaches Critical Pedagogy for the post-graduate students of the Masters’s Program Language Learning for Refugees and Migrants at the Hellenic Open University, while for the period 2015-2017 she taught as academic teacher Rhetoric and Argumentation. Also, since 2014 she is collaborating with the Laboratory of Strategic Communication and Mass Media of the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus both in research level and as students’ trainer in debate. At the same time, since 2011 she works as head-master of a primary school, while she belongs to the trainers of the National School of Public Administration and Local Government (ESDDAA).

Her research interests are focused on the implementation of Rhetoric and Argumentation to all the educational stages, to the educational use of debate, to the relation of Rhetoric to Critical Pedagogy, to Critical and Active Citizenry and in the uses of argument in political speech. She believes to the necessity of integrating rhetoric and argumentation in all levels of education for improving critical literacy and critical thinking.

She has participated to many conferences in Greece and abroad, while she has published numerous scientific papers on the pre-mentioned topics of scientific interest. Her first book The Teaching of Argumentation: From Oral to Written Speech. Theory and Praxis was published in 2014 (in Greek).

Since 2016 she is the founder and President of the Hellenic Institute of Rhetorical and Communication Studies (IRESE in Greek), (, which aims at empowering the scientific interest in Rhetoric, Argumentation and Communication both at theory and praxis level in education as well as in various fields of knowledge and action in Greece and abroad.

Also, she is an experienced trainer of adults in Rhetoric, Argumentation and Public Speaking. She organizes and animates numerous workshops for educators of all the educational stages intending to the diffusion of rhetorical pedagogy and argumentative literacy in the teaching and learning practice. In parallel, she is a certified trainer in debates by the Ιnternational Debate Education Association (IDEA). Since 2012 her program of rhetoric and argumentation for students is applied to a private primary school in Athens, called De la Salle.

Her interest in Public Speaking is also intense. From 2011 she is an active member of the international organization for adults’s Τοastmasters which aims at the enhancement of the skills of public speaking and leadership.

She is a member of the Rhetoric Society of Europe and the Greek Pedagogic Society. She participates as member of the editing board of the e-journal Rhetoric and Communication (in Bulgaria) and of the e-journal Scientific Review (in Greece). Occasionally, she participates as reviewer to the linguistic scientific journal GOVOR / SPEECH (Croatian Journal of Phonetics).

In addition, she has participated as member of the organizing and scientific committee of various pedagogical and rhetoric conferences in Greece and abroad as well as a member of the scientific and organizing committees of school debates and students’ rhetorical exhibitions in collaboration with academic and communal institutions.

In more, she has been presented twice in the Greek television for her action for the diffusion of argumentation, rhetoric and public speaking as well as in daily journals for her action as Toastmasters’ officer (VPE and President) from 2011-2015.

Finally, Foteini is married and her daughter studies English Language and Literature at the University of Athens.
